Jessica caught up with Cece, who looked like she was about to enter another bathroom, the one down the hall that led to the cafeteria. âHey,â Jessica said. âWait up.â Cece looked tired, like she could fall over and sleep right there. It was hard to think of what to say, now that she was standing there. Iâm sorry about your mom. No. Whatâs your name again? Fake.
âYou want to get out of here?â Jessica said. Cece looked at her, ran a hand up her face to push her hair off her forehead.
âHere?â she said.
Jessica was unsure how to answer. What was she asking? âYeah, here.â She put a hand on Ceceâs arm, started gently pulling her along. âItâs easy. You just walk out the side door. I do it all the time.â Technically not all the time. She wasnât a derelict. But it was important for Cece to feel like she was in the presence of an expert, someone she could trust.
âSure,â Cece said. âI guess.â
The first bell rang and kids pushed into classrooms, the hall they were in starting to empty out. They hurried, breaking into a jog as they rounded a corner. It was easy to leave, yes, but that didnât mean teachers wouldnât hassle you. âWeâll have to take a bus,â Jessica said, walking faster. She passed the door to her seventh period. Mr. Lutz had his back turned, probably giving someone a hard time about their hairstyle or piercings. âLetâs haul ass,â Jessica said. Mikey was in his seventh period, weightlifting. With a pang she remembered the hot dog smell he got after.
As they burst out the side door, Jessica stopped. She let the door swing shut behind them. Cece was panting a little. Her hair could definitely use an avocado-and-mayonnaise treatment at some point. âIâm Jessica, by the way,â she said.
âYeah,â Cece said, looking around like she didnât know how sheâd gotten there. âI know.â
